Mestre Djop Barbosa

Elcio Barbosa, known in capoeira circles as Mestre (Master) Djop Barbosa, was born on the 19th of June1963 in the city of Piracicaba, Sao Paulo. He began the practice of capoeira in Piracicaba on 17 October 1979 with Mestre Cosmo Claudival da Costa (28/07/1955 - 04/2004). Mestre Cosmo, was part of the first formed mestres of the Grupo Cativiero Capoeira Group in 1978 in the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP. Djop trained under Mestre Cosmo for four years, continuing his training with Mestre Miguel, who was Mestre Cosmo’s mestre, under whom he would receive the title of Mestre. Throughout his life as a capoeirista, Mestre Djop has had a lot of contact with various renowned capoeira mestres, but two in particular had a special importance in his development. The first was Mestre Ananias, whose active participation in the activities organised by the Grupo Cativeiro in the and 80 and 90s. His first contact with Capoeira Angola would take place in 1981 at the Academy of Mestre Miguel in the Avenue of Consolation in São Paulo. There, during a workshop, he met Mestre Gato Preto and what would become the foundation of a long relationship. When Mestre Gato Preto moved to São Paulo in the 90s, the meetings were almost daily with long conversations followed between one coffee and another… Among others, these are the masters who have shaped Mestre Djop and his journey through the capoeira universe. Mestre Djop has also spent time living in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Goiania, Tocantins and others cities in Brazil, learning and teaching capoeira. He moved to Belgium 1998. Mestre Djop was a part of Grupo Cativiero Capoeira for 32 years until 2012 when he created his own group, Escola de CApoeira in Belgium. Mestre Djop now lives and teaches in Belgium travelling frequently to Brazil and Africa.

Mestra Brisa

Mestra Brisa has been involved in capoeira for over 30 years and comes from a family of capoeira players originating in North East Brazil. Her and her husband, Figura, left London to live in the South West in 2014 and the group has been active since then. Brisa has two sisters and a brother in London and Brighton who are regular visitors to Cornwall to support the group. The group is overseen by Master Roberval, the founder of the group Menino Quem Foi Seu Mestre (Boy, Who is Your Master) and he visits the UK from Brazil regularly. Mestre Roberval is respected throughout the capoeira community and his knowledge of the art form can be traced right back to the old masters. He aims to maintain and preserve the traditions and teachings of capoeira angola.

Contramestre Charel

Charel, is a musician and capoeirista. Born in Salvador, Bahia in Brazil, he is today a well-known capoeira teacher in Europe. Having been in touch with capoeira from an early age on, he started to practice capoeira angola in 2003 with the professor Gigante and Mestre Marcelo Angola’s group Angoleiros do Mar. This group was founded in 1999 at Barra Grande on the island of Itaparica, in Bahia, Brazil. After training two years with different teachers on Mestre Marcelo Angola’s sides he arrived in Europe in 2005. Here he continued his formation as capoeira angola ‘treinel’ within the association ‘Angoleiros do Mar Lille’ in France and their Professor Bizarro. In 2006 Charel Perere decided to move to Switzerland in order to create the group ‘Angoleiros do Mar Lausanne’. Here he has taught both movement and music to adults, adolecents and children for about six years. He further strenghend his teaching skills with youth by working over three years in the monitoring of young children for the city of Lausanne. Toghether with the other Angoleiros do Mar groups around the world, he developed and promoted the afro-bresilien culture throughout Switzerland and Europe. In 2013 alone, he was invited to teach in Norway, Sweden, Russia, Germany, Italy, Austria, the UK, Switzerland and several cities in France.

Contramestre Angolinha de Itumbiara

Rodrigo Silva—known in capoeira as Angolinha de Itumbiara—was born in Itumbiara, in the state of Goiás, central-west Brazil. He discovered capoeira at age 11 and was immediately drawn to it, captivated by the beauty of the instruments and the movements in the roda, where one plays with a partner rather than against them. Since then, he has trained continuously, traveling, learning, and deepening his understanding of this Afro-Brazilian art form. His journey has been shaped by encounters and exchanges across Brazil and Europe, including with figures such as Contra Mestre Paraná, Mestre Valtinho da Senzala, Mestre Sombra, Mestre Guimes, Mestre Leninho, Mestre Caçador, Mestre Chuluca, Mestre Guaraná, and Mestre Vermelho. Based in France since 2012, he teaches Capoeira Angola to both adults and children in Montpellier and Grabels. Since 2014, he has organized regular Capoeira Angola gatherings with participants from Brazil and across Europe, creating spaces for exchange and community.

In 2019, encouraged by his teacher Mestre Vermelho, he founded the association Capoeira Angola Berimbaus de Guatambu. “Guatambu” refers to a noble wood traditionally used in central Brazil to make the berimbau—the instrument that leads the capoeira roda—making the name a tribute to both the material and the tradition. He also crafts traditional Capoeira Angola instruments by hand, including the berimbau, pandeiro, caxixi, and reco-reco.
